Living a Life That Points People to Jesus
As Paul closes his letter to the Colossians, he doesn’t end with grand theology or dramatic speeches. Instead, he gives simple, practical reminders on how to pray, how to speak, how to treat people, and how to faithfully carry out the work God has given us.
Sometimes it’s the ordinary habits that shape an extraordinary faith.

Lesson 1: Remember That You Answer to God
Verse 1
Masters, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember that you also have a Master—in heaven.
What’s happening here?
Paul reminds those in positions of authority that their power isn’t absolute. They, too, are accountable to God.
While our workplaces and relationships look different today, the principle remains the same: whether we’re leading a team, raising children, managing a business, or simply influencing others, God cares about how we treat people.

The way we treat others says a lot about how seriously we take God’s authority over our own lives.

Leadership in God’s Kingdom is never about control; it’s about stewardship, humility, and justice.

Lesson 2: Prayer Is More Than Asking; It’s Staying Awake to God
Verses 2–4
2 Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. 3 Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. 4 Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should.

Paul encourages believers to be committed to prayer consistently.
He asks them to pray not only for themselves but also for him, that even while imprisoned, he would continue sharing Jesus clearly.

Lesson 3: Every Conversation Is an Opportunity
Verses 5–6
5 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive[a] so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Paul reminds us that the way we live and speak matters.
People often experience Jesus through the everyday interactions they have with His followers.

Lesson 4: Faith Is Meant to Be Lived in Community
Verses 7–11
7 Tychicus will give you a full report about how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper who serves with me in the Lord’s work. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you. 9 I am also sending Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, one of your own people. He and Tychicus will tell you everything that’s happening here.
10 Aristarchus, who is in prison with me, sends you his greetings, and so does Mark, Barnabas’s cousin. As you were instructed before, make Mark welcome if he comes your way. 11 Jesus (the one we call Justus) also sends his greetings. These are the only Jewish believers among my co-workers; they are working with me here for the Kingdom of God. And what a comfort they have been!

Although he is the one writing the letter, he makes sure others are recognized, appreciated, and encouraged.

God rarely grows us in isolation. He often uses faithful people to strengthen and encourage us.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the people You’ve placed in my life. Help me encourage others as faithfully as they encourage me. Amen.
Lesson 5: Never Underestimate the Ministry of Prayer
Verses 12–13
12 Epaphras, a member of your own fellowship and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings. He always prays earnestly for you, asking God to make you strong and perfect, fully confident that you are following the whole will of God. 13 I can assure you that he prays hard for you and also for the believers in Laodicea and Hierapolis.
What’s happening here?
Paul highlights Epaphras, not because he preached a famous sermon or performed miracles, but because he prayed faithfully for others.
His ministry happened largely behind the scenes.

Some of the greatest Kingdom work happens where no one else can see it.

Lesson 6: Every Person Has a Part to Play
Verses 14–17
14 Luke, the beloved doctor, sends his greetings, and so does Demas. 15 Please give my greetings to our brothers and sisters[b] at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church that meets in her house.
16 After you have read this letter, pass it on to the church at Laodicea so they can read it, too. And you should read the letter I wrote to them.
17 And say to Archippus, “Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you.”
What’s happening here?
Paul mentions doctors, hosts, church leaders, and faithful servants; each person contributes differently, yet every role matters.
Then Paul gives a personal reminder to Archippus:
“Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you.”
Gentle Truth
God doesn’t compare your assignment to someone else’s.
He simply invites you to faithfully finish what He entrusted to you.
Takeaway
Your calling may look ordinary to others, but it is significant to God.

Lesson 7: Grace Has the Final Word
Verse 18
18 HERE IS MY GREETING IN MY OWN HANDWRITING—PAUL.
Remember my chains.
May God’s grace be with you.

Paul closes the letter by reminding the believers that he is still imprisoned.
Yet he doesn’t end with complaints. He ends with grace.
Even while carrying chains, Paul points people toward God’s goodness instead of his suffering.

Our circumstances may change, but God’s grace remains constant.

Grace is not just where the Christian life begins—it’s how we continue every single day.

Colossians ends much like the Christian life itself, not with spectacular moments, but with ordinary faithfulness.
Pray consistently. Speak graciously. Encourage others. Stay faithful to your calling. Love your community. Trust God’s grace.
These quiet habits may not always feel extraordinary, but they are exactly the kind of life through which Jesus shines.

Teach me to be devoted in prayer, with a heart that is both watchful and thankful. Let my conversations be full of grace, my actions reflect Your love, and my life point others to Jesus.
Help me to faithfully carry out the work You’ve given me without comparing my journey to anyone else’s. Strengthen me to serve with humility, encourage those around me, and remember that no act of obedience is ever unseen by You.
