Jesus Is Enough
A Bible study through Colossians 2 on finding your identity in Christ instead of rules.

Let’s grab our Bible, journal, and pen, and let’s spend some time in Colossians 2 together 🤍
Before we begin, take a moment to whisper a personal prayer to God.
Rooted in Christ, Not Rules
Colossians 2
Sometimes the Christian life can start to feel complicated. We hear so many opinions about what a “real Christian” should do, what we should avoid, and what we need to add to our faith.
But Paul gently brings us back to one simple truth:
Jesus is enough.
Lesson 1: Everything We Need Is Found in Christ
Verses 1–3
I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally. 2 I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. 3 In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
What’s happening here?
Paul has never met many of these believers, yet he deeply cares about their spiritual growth.
His greatest desire isn’t for them to become more impressive Christians. It’s that they become people who are united in love and deeply rooted in Christ, because Jesus Himself is God’s greatest mystery revealed.
Gentle Truth
The more we know Jesus, the less we’ll feel like we’re missing something.
Takeaway
We’re not searching for hidden spiritual secrets.
Our greatest treasure has always been Christ.

Do I spend more time searching for answers, or spending time with the One who is the Answer?
Prayer
Jesus, help me treasure You above information, achievements, or experiences. Draw my heart closer to You today. Amen.
Lesson 2: Not Everything That Sounds Wise Is True
Verses 4–5
4 I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments. 5 For though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I rejoice that you are living as you should and that your faith in Christ is strong.
What’s happening here?
Paul knows that false teaching rarely sounds obviously wrong.
Sometimes it sounds intelligent. Reasonable. Even convincing.
That’s why believers need strong roots in truth.
Gentle Truth
Something can sound wise and still lead us away from Jesus.
Takeaway
Truth isn’t measured by how persuasive someone sounds.
It’s measured by whether it points us back to Christ.

Whose voice has had the greatest influence on my thinking lately?
Prayer
Lord, give me discernment. Help me recognize truth, even when deception sounds convincing. Amen.
Lesson 3: Healthy Faith Keeps Growing
Verses 6–7
6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
What’s happening here?
Paul reminds them that the Christian life doesn’t stop at salvation.
It’s a lifelong journey of growing deeper roots in Jesus.
Like a healthy tree, believers become stronger the deeper they’re planted.
Gentle Truth
Strong faith isn’t built overnight. It grows one faithful day at a time.
Takeaway
Stay rooted in Christ, and gratitude will naturally begin to overflow.

What daily habit helps my roots grow deeper in Jesus?
Prayer
Father, keep my heart firmly planted in You. Help me grow steadily, faithfully, and joyfully. Amen.
Lesson 4: Christ Is Enough
Verses 8–10
8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers[a] of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.[b] 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
What’s happening here?
False teachers were suggesting believers needed something more than Jesus.
Paul lovingly corrects them. In Christ lives the fullness of God.
And because we belong to Him, we are complete in Him.
Gentle Truth
You don’t have to earn completeness.
Jesus has already given it to you.
Takeaway
Our identity is rooted in Christ, not in what we accomplish or accumulate.

Where am I tempted to believe that Jesus alone isn’t enough?
Prayer
Jesus, remind me that You are enough for me, and that in You, I lack nothing. Amen.
Lesson 5: The Cross Didn’t Just Forgive You; It Freed You
Verses 11–15
11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature.[c] 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.
13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed[d] the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
What’s happening here?
Paul paints a beautiful picture of salvation.
Our old life died with Christ, our sins were forgiven, our debt was canceled, and through the cross, Jesus defeated every spiritual power standing against us.
Gentle Truth
The cross isn’t only about forgiveness.
It’s also about freedom.
Takeaway
You no longer have to live as though you’re still carrying guilt that Jesus already carried.

Is there guilt I’ve been holding onto that Jesus has already nailed to the cross?
Prayer
Thank You, Jesus, for forgiving me completely. Help me walk in the freedom You purchased for me. Amen.
Lesson 6: Don’t Let Rules Replace Relationship
Verses 16–19
16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality. 18 Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels,[e] saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, 19 and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.
What’s happening here?
Some people were judging believers based on religious traditions, ceremonies, and extra rules.
Paul reminds them that these practices were only shadows.
Jesus is the reality.
Gentle Truth
God isn’t inviting us into performance; He’s inviting us into relationship.
Takeaway
Our confidence comes from belonging to Christ, not from perfectly following traditions.

Father, keep my heart close to You. Help me pursue a relationship over religious performance. Amen.
Lesson 7: Rules Can Change Behavior, But Only Jesus Changes Hearts
Verses 20–23
20 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.
What’s happening here?
Paul ends with an important reminder.
Human rules can make us look disciplined on the outside, but they cannot transform the heart.
Only Jesus can do that.
Gentle Truth
Real transformation begins from the inside out.
Takeaway
Christianity isn’t about trying harder.
It’s about becoming more like Christ through His Spirit.

Am I relying more on my own effort or on God’s transforming grace?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, continue changing my heart. Teach me to depend on Your power instead of my own strength. Amen.

Paul keeps bringing us back to one beautiful truth: Jesus is enough.
When we’re rooted in Him, we don’t have to chase every new teaching, prove our worth through rules, or carry the weight of our past. We can rest in the finished work of Christ.
Today, may your heart find peace in this simple reminder: You are complete in Him.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You because everything I truly need is found in Christ. When I’m tempted to believe I need more than Jesus, gently draw my heart back to the truth that He is enough.
Help my roots grow deeper in You each day. Give me discernment to recognize voices that pull me away from Your truth, and wisdom to hold tightly to Your Word. Teach me to live from the freedom You purchased for me on the cross, not from fear, guilt, or the pressure to earn Your love.
Transform me from the inside out. May my faith be more than outward appearances or religious routines. Let my life be marked by genuine love, humble obedience, and a heart that delights in knowing You.
Thank You that my sins are forgiven, my debt has been canceled, and my identity is secure in Christ. Help me walk confidently in that freedom today and every day.
May I always remember that I am complete in Jesus.
